The thyroid gland makes hormones that largely regulate metabolism, so when your thyroid is underactive, your metabolism will slow down. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t lose weight. To lose weight, you must create a calorie deficit by eating fewer calories than you burn. Since you’ll likely be burning fewer calories when you have hypothyroidism, you might need to drop calories fairly low to create this deficit.

When you sign up with Avatar Nutrition, the system will set your starting macros based on what the average person your size and activity level would need to lose weight. Since you have hypothyroidism, the system will likely overestimate your needs at first, but this will be corrected over the next couple of check-ins. The power of the Avatar system lies in its ability to self-regulate based on your progress each week. No matter what condition you have, if it affects your ability to achieve your goal, the system will detect this and adjust its recommendations to get you back on track!

If you already know how many calories you need to make progress, you can set your calories in Diet Settings or email our Coaching Team at coaching@avatarnutriton.com to assist you with setting your macros. By doing this, you’ll give the system the best possible information to establish a starting point and can hit the ground running instead of waiting a few weeks for the Avatar system to pinpoint your exact needs.

If you find that your prescribed calories are too low to stick with, you may want to either choose a less aggressive fat loss setting or change your goal to reverse dieting.
