Many people believe that drinking more water can enhance weight loss by the following:

  1. Flushing out fat

The amount of fat you burn is based on the size of your calorie deficit, not on how much water you drink. Fat breakdown (lipolysis) will happen regardless of water intake, and your kidneys have the ability to concentrate urine despite drinking only a small amount. Drinking more water will only cause the byproducts of fat breakdown and metabolism to be diluted, it will not increase fat loss or cause you to" flush" more fat out.

  1. Boosting metabolism

Although drinking more water is believed by many to be thermogenic and increase metabolism, recent studies haven’t found this to be true. While drinking water has been shown to increase fat oxidation in several studies, this likely wasn’t due to the water itself, but the fasting state of the subjects. Contrary to popular belief, drinking cold water (which in theory would require energy to warm up to body temperature) hasn’t been shown to have a significant effect on calorie burning either.

  1. Improving satiety

Drinking more water may aid weight loss efforts by helping to reduce hunger. Some studies have shown that drinking water before or with a meal may help increase satiety, reducing subsequent calorie intake. The take away here is that drinking more water might help you better stick to a low-calorie weight loss diet.
