Whether or not you should try to hit your macros when sick will depend on exactly how sick you are. If you’re feeling a little rough but not quite dead to the world yet, then try to hit your macros as closely as possible.

If you’re on a fat loss goal and worried about putting on weight given your sudden drop in activity, take some solace in the fact that your body will burn extra calories to fight off the illness. Depending on how active you typically are, the extra calories required may not offset the calories you’d typically burn when walking around and exercising, but spending a few days recovering in bed isn’t going to totally kill your progress. Chances are you’ll only be laid up for a day or two, so you may as well stay on track and hit your macros.

Try to stick to easily digestible, nutrient dense food to make hitting your targets easier.

On the other hand, if you’re sick as a dog, making frequent trips to the bathroom, and have trouble just looking at food, then forget strict macros for now and focus instead on getting as much good quality nutrition as you can keep down.

This will involve consuming more liquids and trying to make everything you eat as nutritious as possible so that what you do keep down can go toward repair and recovery. After you bounce back from your illness, make sure to start hitting your macros again and mark non-compliant at your weekly check-in. You might even consider switching your goal to vacation mode while you’re sick!
